Ice (An Allusion Poem)

Ice

As heat is applied, it thins.
As weight increases,
It weakens.

The constant barrage
Weakens its resolve.
It cracks.

Patience dissolves in
The heat of anger.
It shatters.

Poetry Excerpts

Parts of Speech –Ingrid De Kok

Some stories don’t want to be told.
They walk away, carrying their suitcases
held together with grey string.
Look at their disappearing curved spines.
Hunchbacks. Harmed ones. Hold-alls.

Punishment – Seamus Heaney

My poor scapegoat,

I almost love you
but would have cast, I know
the stones of silence.

Ars Poetica – Archibald MacLeish

A poem should not mean
But be.

Diving into the Wreck – Adrienne Rich

I came to explore the wreck.
The words are purposes.
The words are maps.
I came to see the damage that was done
And the treasures that prevail.

The Day (An Occasion Poem)

Just a few days ago they’d sung his praise
With dancing, voices and palm leaves raised,
Only to think that now at their hands he’d die
With more shouts of jubilee than of anguished cries.

That was the day the earth shook and the veil tore.
With the sin upon him, the Father-Son bond shorn.
The day that men consider the day God died
When on our behalf he was buried and tried.

That was a dark day of our history, yet just the first,
For the day after this was still much, much worse,
When the world seemed as if it were godless
And it appeared as if there was no hope of holiness.

That was the second dark day of human history,
But he knows better than us. It is Hs story.
It was on the third day when he won his bride,
That was the day He conquered. The day death died.

Blindside

Blindsided again in the dark
Pain so hard, a loss so deep
I wrap my arms around me tight
Trying to hold my world together.
It feels like it did some time ago:
Shattering, breaking, falling apart
All around me. I hold in my cries
As everyone sleeps, and I feel
The hot tears burn pathways
Down my face, pooling in my eyes,
Sliding down my cheeks, or into
My ears, where the hot liquid cools
And I am left feeling frozen. Again.
